Pucon is an admittedly touristy mountain town in southern Chile, but for good reason. Lake Villarrica expands out from the shorefront of Pucon, and if you visit during wintertime you will see some of the most incredible sunsets of your life. Better yet, rent a kayak or some other sort of buoyant object and you can float out and become part of the kaleidoscopic colors yourself. Behind Pucon sits the smoldering Villarrica Volcano, and given a long day and a pair of thunder-thighs, you can ascend to its harrowing crater. Don't expect to stay there for long though. The climb may take 7 hours but the icy winds and sudden drafts of thick sulfur fumes will send you home freezing and coughing within a few minutes.
